For this blog:

This blog is about our trip to Europe with our kids. One month trip through Germany, France, Luxemburg, Belgium, Netherlands, and Austria. Sightseeing and visiting with our former Au Pairs.

The photos are scanned from our albums and postcards and other documents and was put together several years after the trip. The photographs were from film instead of digital shots. The quality of the photos has degraded somewhat with some grainy images. We were unable to find the old photos from some of the places and activities we visited on the trip and mentioned in the blog.

Prior to our trip - At home and au pair letters

June 26 – 27 - Fly to Munich, Germany

Gifts we brought for our au-pairs, some of which was requested:

10 hour flight, left San Francisco mid-afternoon, arrived Frankfurt 10:30 am.

A sunset (sunrise?) on the plane.

Josh slept 2 hours. Paul, Mary, and Jessica did not get any sleep on the plane. Jessica spilled orange juice on her carry-on, cleaned it up as best we could. Both kids travel well. Then a plane to Munich. Snacks were served in the lounge before boarding. Fruit, pastry, and soup. Upon boarding, everyone had to ID their luggage. Jessica’s was not there! She was assured it would be loaded, and it did show up in Munich. It was raining.

The hotel had an auto elevator that took the car down to the garage. We first went to the Haufbrauhaus for dinner, but Josh was very tired and hungry and the noise in the restaurant was too loud and he was upset and had a meltdown, so our first meal in Europe – McDonalds.

Friday June 28 - Munich and a drive through Bavaria

Jessica’s observations:

- They all drive like maniacs, so you must be aggressive.
- The houses and buildings are better than SF.

Still raining this morning.

Drove to Linderhof Palace, a retreat for King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Of the three palaces he built, this is the only one that was completed.

Lots and lots of gold.

Behind the castle was a long staircase of water.

Wandering the gardens.

The grotto was up in hill behind the palace and was small but interesting. There was a swan boat in the lake.

Went to Partnachklamm gorge, which has a beautiful walk through the gorge. However, the river walk was closed – too much rain. We hiked above the gorge to a café at the top. Took the “easy” way down but ended up a mile below our car! Paul hiked up, got the car (kids were pooped), and we drove back down.

Next stop was a drive through Oberammergau. This village hosts a passion play every 10 years. Paul saw it when he was in the Air Force in Germany in 1970. Still pretty rainy so we didn't stop to wander around.
